| The dogs featured on this page are unable, or unlikely, to be rehomed, and are permanent residents at the Barn.
Lizzie’s Barn is primarily a Sanctuary. Dogs that can be rehomed go to their new owners as soon as they can be found, but for some that isn't possible. This may be due to a chronic medical condition that will require constant care or due to behavioural problems possibly caused by previous ill-treatment. Whatever the reason, if they cannot be rehomed they will stay at Lizzie's Barn to be taken care of for the rest of their lives. We think our dogs deserve the best we can give them. Regular vaccinations, worming, good nutrition & appropriate medical treatments / intervention, are all essential & expensive, but can transform the lives of neglected & sick dogs. Sometimes special diets & medications may be required throughout their lives. You can help us to provide these things by sponsoring one, or more, of the dogs below. Please indicate when applying if yiou wish to be a 'Green Sponsor' & receive your pack via email. If you are giving sponsorship as a gift, please indicate if this is for a child &, if so, their age. We leave you to decide the amount you want to pledge, but suggest a minimum of £5 a month. In return for your payment you will recieve a sponsorship pack containing information about your chosen dog/s history & character, a certificate & photo, a keyring & pen & will receive quarterly updates. Alternatively, for a once a year payment, a minimum of £20, you will receive a sponsorship pack containing information about your chosen dog/s history & character, a certificate & photo. | Our permanent residents Megan
Megan, Arrived with her newly-born pups, unwanted one Christmas from a Welsh pound. Although her pups have all been rehomed, Megan's difficult early life will mean she is never suitable for re-homing. She has been at Lizzie's Barn for 9 years. Megan is responsible for the rumour that circulates among the dogs - it says “if you are really naughty when Rehomed, you can stay at Lizzies Barn forever” . Megan lives Mostly in the Farmhouse with Mick & Toby, but sometimes chooses to stay in the Barn with Fionna Rocky
Rocky- An old man now at 10 yrs old Rocky was left behind at the farm when we bought it. He quickly began to develop white patches & went on to loose his sight too, the vets told us he had an auto immune condition that causes his body to attack its the pigment in its cells. He was not expected to live a long life, but has done very well. Rocky is happy & confident in his surroundings. His condition worsens when he is stressed so it has been decided that he will remain at the Sanctuary for the rest of his life. He lives in the Farmhouse with Mick & Toby Dakota
Dakota is a gorgeous Siberian Husky, He came to us with congenital cataracts at 16 months old.Multiple eye surgeries sorted out those problems, but unfortunately he lost the sight in one eye when the retina became detached, a not uncommon side effect of eye surgery. Sadly attempts to re attach it didn’t work. He also has a lung condition with similar affects to cystic fibrosis, & is on daily medication for that. Dakota lives in the Barn with Fionna. He will stay at the Sanctuary for the rest of his life. Chase
A too hairless, Hairless Chinese Crested Dog. A puppy farm reject because he was unsold & passed his sell by date, Chase was around 4 months old when he joined us. Now nearly 8years old Chase has never truly mastered house training, Chase has remained with us, initially because we had no suitable applicants- he is a real dog, liking all the same things as any other dog, he attracted home offers from people who wanted a doll- something to dress up & cuddle, not a dog who needed training, company &exercise. Over the years it became clear that Chase would never be reliably clean. He has shown a real talent in teaching puppies & adult dogs how to deal with small fry like himself., & eventually we decided after living with us for several years the kindest option for chase would be promotion to the Staff. He lives & works with Fionna as one of the core members of the Sanctuary Joe
Joe was born at the Sanctuary. His mother Quita ,a Japanese Akita X, had come to us as a heavily pregnant, unclaimed stray, from one of the pounds. Joe, one of 6 beautiful pups, sadly never attracted a home, possibly because of his parentage & the fact he resembled his mum the most as a puppy. Fortunately life at the barn isn’t so bad & Joe lives happily with Fionna & the gang in the barn Jocie
A Whippet X & spent several years living feral in the mountains. It is probable that she was an abandoned puppy .She spent 8 months at the dogs trust & came to us because they were unable to make any progress in ‘taming’ her. She is happy at the barn, loves the freedom we can give her & trusts the people who care for her, She enjoys lying by the wood burner in winter, & is always first on the sofa. Jocie lives in Barn with Fionna & will stay for the rest of her days.
Apple
Apple lived with 3 other German Shepherds with an elderly lady who lived as a recluse. Apple was never house trained, toileting where she stood was the norm for her. She never learnt how to accept or give affection or to meet people. Bullied by the dogs she lived with, she never really learnt how to interact with her own species either, she lived her life cowed, hungry & in pain from chronic ear infections, so bad that despite their best efforts the vets couldn’t cure. Eventually surgery revealed the linings of the ear canals stripped away by infection, they removed both ear canals, leaving her with reduced hearing , but oh so much more comfortable. Apple is happy at the barn & takes great comfort from the company & reassurance that dogs like Poppy & George give.
Lady aka Loopy Loo Lady aka Loopy loo Loopy Loo has a slightly facial abnormality, she also has behavioural problems. Living with lady is like living with twins- only they are both wearing the same body. From time to time she has serious arguments with herself, suddenly leaping in the air and shouting. She can be very unpleasant to new people, but if she takes an instant dislike today- tomorrow you will probably be her best buddy! She lives in the Farmhouse with Mick & Toby. Bonnie & Riggle
Bonnie & Riggle joined us as 5 month old puppies, along with 22 other dogs, from one of the saved from a pre new year cull of all unwanted dogs from one of the pounds. Bonnie was too traumatised by the life on the streets & never managed to settle in a home, still having a real fear of strangers. Riggle, by contrast was delightful & loved everyone, she went off to try as a hearing dog, she didn’t make the grade, but came back from her foster home so traumatised, it took 18 months for her to be able to leave the property, or meet strangers, without shaking so violently she messed herself, Both are now 11 years old & work alongside Fionna as core members of the sanctuary, having valuable roles in helping new dogs to feel welcome & secure whilst with us. Poppy & George Foxhounds Poppy came to us 11 years ago as an unclaimed stray. She was in appalling condition & completely bald with mange, her skin was so sore that she screamed at even the lightest of touches. Over the following months as she began to heal, both physically & mentally from the terrible neglect she had suffered, it became clear that she had never lived in a house. She did a tremendous amount of damage, & we used to joke that she should be on the children’s TV show ‘Blue Peter’ with here’s one I chewed earlier’ masterpieces
- generally referring to something big like a sofa! We think Poppy must have been a brood bitch because she mothered everything.
George came to us from Ireland 6 years ago, where he had been picked up like Poppy, as a stray in appalling condition. Nursed back to health by the rescue that took him in, he had been unsuccessfully seeking a home for many months. George fancied himself as a bit of a lad, & was quite a difficult character both with humans & other dogs, always wanting to be numero uno! But hard work, age & experience have mellowed him into the wonderful dog he now is. We believe both Poppy & George originally came from Hunt kennels & grew up in a pack environment. Neither was successful in settling in ordinary homes, (although many Foxhounds do) & the families that tried really did give them a good chance. They both seem to need the freedom & varied company of many dogs that they couldn’t find in the average home. So now Poppy & her buddy George are the barn ‘House Parents’ & working with Fionna to lead our challenging & varied community. BRUSSELS AKA 'Brush'
Brush was found in the desert in Arizona. A half grown pup he was living feral, on the edges of the Sonora Reservation. He has never quite learnt to trust & feel safe amoung people, He bonded well with Fionna, as they all do, & lives with her & only now after more than seven years has begun to honor special people with affection & attention. Superb with other dogs of all ages , though always shy & reticent to be around people, Brush has remained with us at the Sanctuary. He is our Alpha male in many respects & is in charge of canine discipline- in the nicest possible way. Along with George he supervises pups & teaches them respect & Obedience, & above all how to have fun! in return they constantly remind him that people are good to be around too. | | The dogs in this column are affectionately known as the ’Brat Pack’. They live in the Barn with Fionna, & are all dogs who have behavioural issues. We hope one day some of them will be able to be rehomed, but they are assured of a happy permanent home here for the rest of their lives. Sponsors are sought to help support them. Jet
A Cocker Spaniel. Jet is a smashing dog. He started life as a normal puppy, but somewhere along the line it seems his ’personal space ’ was seriously invaded leaving him feeling very threatened. He became a bad tempered lad & despairing his owners bought him to us. It has taken time, but he is very loyal & affectionate with me now, & trusts me completely. Jet is a companionable chap, just not cuddly. We hope one day he will find another home, but know he is happy here with us while he waits for that special person. Sally Sally is a very special girl, born blind, she also has behavioural issues & is an absolute master when it comes to tantrums. \sally is probably autistic & this & her blindness give her a very different perception of the world. Sally is a happy girl & leads a fulfilling life, with time & patience we have taught her more acceptable ways to deal with her frustrations. The other dogs are all very good with her & seem to understand she is different & make allowances when her behaviour is inappropriate. Her difficulties make re homing her almost impossible. Sally lives in the Barn with Fionna Tag
Tag is a very pretty &rather large Collie boy. It seems he lived his formative months as a ‘feral’ puppy, it is also likely that he was an only puppy taken from Mum far too soon.. He has missed out on many of the socialisation skills most dogs learn from their mother & siblings. Tag’s behaviour, though generally well intentioned is often inappropriate, he becomes very protective of those he loves, human & canine, coupled with his natural suspicion & distrust of strangers, this is why he is still with us. Tag adores his one to one training sessions & has an amazing attention span. He lives with Fionna Blue
Jake
Jake, a pretty blue roan Cocker spaniel, is a canine Victor Meldrew, he hates to be hassled by man or beast, disliking anyone who hassles him or invade his space. His family of 6 years were afraid he wouldn’t cope with children, so he joined us at the Barn. I suspect his eyesight is not brilliant as he is easily startled by sudden movement, especially touch However if you respect his feelings & personal boundaries him he is great. Obedient & affectionate, although in a more hands off way than most people wish from their cockers, he is easy to live with & always behaves on excursions to the beach, knowing we wont let passers crowd him. Black Jack Another ex poundie Jack must have had a difficult life. He suffers from extreme separation anxiety, & couldn’t cope with being left at all. Even leaving him crated meant he messed himself so badly, and injured himself in his panic to escape, it took hours to clean him up. He would even destroy the car if left in side whilst one filled up with petrol, & was a absolutely petrified of Thunderstorms. to find a home, sadly no one felt able to take the time he needed. However he is now happy & settled with the freedom of the Barn, & can even be left for short periods, even in the car. the car! He has the freedom of the farm & property & patrols it at will, If Jack were to given a staff title I guess it would be head of the Police & Security. He is a terrific guard dog & challenges every intruder, non violently I must add, including every last drop of rain! He keeps a close check on the horses & can be relied upon to inform us of there whereabouts at any given time. He also takes his role of pointing out the crimes of all the other dogs very, very seriously. Whitney A lovely girl who sadly spent 2 years in a rescue kennels before coming to us. Whitney is an English Bull Terrier X Staffie, sadly born deaf. She has a delightful sense of humour & is such fun to be around. She has been rehome twice, but on both occasions cried & cried , refusing to settle for several days, until her new families couldn’t bear any more & brought her back- where she immediately quietened, cheered up & promptly slept for days. It seems Whitney is happiest here She lives in the Barn with Fionna. Sally Malli coming soon | |
